Pharmacy Role

Pharmacy staff play an important role in helping patients feel confident and supported in managing their stoma. Simple explanation of supporting products available like adhesive removers, barrier wipes, or seals can make a big difference , prevent skin problems, and reduce anxiety. By offering guidance and reassurance, pharmacy teams can help patients use their supplies effectively, avoid complications, and feel more independent in their daily care.

While detailed stoma teaching is usually done by a stoma nurse, pharmacy staff can:

  • Reinforce correct product use with simple explanations  - see product application aids (within the Education & Training section) or seek support from the supplier stoma Nurse (see referral path section)
  • Explain & show supporting products available  (e.g., adhesive removers , skin barrier products, seals etc.)

1. Build Patient Confidence

  • Handling pouches and supporting products can feel overwhelming, especially for new stoma patients.
  • A demonstration shows patients how to use products correctly, which reassures them and reduces anxiety (see Product Guides & Application Aids within the Education and Training section )

 2. Ensure Correct Use

  • Misuse (e.g., not applying barrier products properly, removing bags too roughly, or using too much skin prep) can lead to leaks, sore skin, or wasted products.

 3. Promote Skin Health & Prevent Complications

  • Correct application of supporting products helps avoid irritation, infections, and leaks.
  • Explain how to gently remove adhesives, for example, protects fragile peristomal skin.

5. Empower Patients to Be Independent

  • Many patients want to manage their stoma privately.
  • Product application aids give them the skills to care for themselves with confidence and dignity.

 6. Support Problem-Solving

  • If a patient reports issues (e.g., leaks, odour, difficulty removing bags), suggest supporting products and or a Stoma Nurse review , as the patients stoma size/shape may have changed and a alternative ostomy device/supporting product may need to be prescribed/used.
